This article will give you practical tips to help you make some new and healthy habits, even when you’re far from home.

We tend to be creatures of HABIT, so when we change our environment and routine, it’s not always easy to stick with our usual routine and lifestyle. And that’s OK. And WHY I wrote this for you – below are simple steps towards healthier HABITS which will help you stay fit when traveling for work or pleasure.

After all, everybody travels.

The first step to set yourself up for success and keep fit while traveling is to bring your workout clothes and anything else you might want to have a great workout. They won’t take up much room either, so if you decide to go shopping you’ll have plenty of room for your new goodies!

⦁ Workout Gear – fitness clothes, runners/gym shoes, swimsuit, mp3/iPod
⦁ Optional – Jump rope, resistance bands/tubing

Tips to Staying Fit While You Travel

1. Choose a Hotel with a Fitness Centre

This is a great option when you’re traveling and extremely convenient as it’s only a few steps from your room. If your hotel doesn’t have a fitness centre you can easily workout in your room too. Your other option is outside, this is my favourite workout spot, especially when I’m in a hot and sunny location!

Typically the hotel’s website will list the types of machines that are available (their online photo galleries are helpful as well). If you can’t find what you are looking for online, call the front desk. Additionally, the front desk will have information on local jogging and hiking paths. They get asked a lot of questions and usually have the answers to point you in the right direction.

When out of town, I notice a lot of people use this as an excuse not to exercise. This is a big mistake, BIG, because adding fitness into your schedule will only enhance the experience of your trip, whether it being for business or pleasure. You may not be able to work out at the same gung-ho pace you can at home, but even a short workout can really boost your energy levels and keep you on track. Keeping fit and active will help your business meetings become more successful and your sightseeing and adventurous days more enjoyable.

2. Keep Those Muscles Moving

As I mentioned earlier, you can do your workout in the hotel fitness centre, in your room, or outside. I give clients workouts that you can do anytime and anywhere, easy peasy. Staying active and fit can be easy, flexible and convenient, so get some help from an expert if you don’t know what to do or how to do it.

3. Walk Around

What better way to experience the city you’re in than on foot? Ask the hotel staff for some sights within walking distance – shops, parks or neat neighborhoods. See if you can walk instead of taking shuttle buses or driving. Make it a rule that if the route is under a mile, you have to walk!

You can get a cardio workout in by simply walking or jogging out the hotel door. Even if you only have 10-20 minutes for a quickie, it’s better than nothing! It helps to talk to the concierge to ask about walking/running paths or routes and to make sure the neighborhood is safe. He or she will often have a map for you with a highlighted route, and it might include some points of interest you could check out along the way.
Enjoy the surroundings of a new environment as you briskly move. You get to take in the sights and exercise at the same time, sounds like a win-win situation!

4. Wake Up Early

I can hear the groans already, but it’s true. Typically at the end of your day you’re not in the mood to exercise. Rise & shine 30 minutes before you normally would and get it done, you’ll feel happier and energized all day because of it!

Remember to have FUN when you work out ladies, feeling some gratitude that you are able to exercise works wonders for motivation. I know a few people at the gym who are in wheelchairs and would give anything to have the freedom to move, remember how lucky you are! Studies have proven that working out gives you more energy and makes you much more conscientious about your food choices throughout the day – why not start the day out right?

5. Get In a Quickie (yes that kind of quickie works too;)

Even if you only have 10 minutes to spare, put on your iPod or the TV music channel then pump up the tunes while you do a 10 min blast of lunges, push-ups, sit ups, and burpees – you’ll be sweating in no time and your workout will be done in a flash– not bad hey?! “If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right!”
